The Land in Winter by Andrew Miller, shortlisted for The Booker Prize 2025, is set in the West Country in December 1962, the harshest winter in living memory. In the darkness of an old asylum, a young man unscrews the lid from a bottle of sleeping pills and in the nearby village, a local doctor, contemplating secrets, sets out on his rounds, while his pregnant wife sleeps on. Across the field, troubled Rita, is also asleep, her head full of images of a past life her husband prefers to ignore.
‘Delicate and devastating’ – The Independent.
Gladys West will lead the discussion.
